Cameron to announce new cyber defence drive to protect nuclear facilities
DB News: 02/06/2016 - 09:59
Prime Minister David Cameron is set to announce a new drive to protect nuclear facilities across the world from cyberattack following fears that terrorists are considering targeting vulnerable sites.
The Telegraph has reported that Britain will invest £10 million into making sure nuclear material overseas is kept securely. Government officials will launch a joint exercise with US counterparts to identify weaknesses in Britain’s nuclear industry in 2017 and train experts from countries including Turkey, South Korea, Japan and Argentina.
While government sources have assured there was no ‘credible evidence’ that terrorists were targeting nuclear power stations, it was still ’sensible’ to take precautions.
The news comes after Belian media reported that two of the suicide bombers involved in the Brussels attacks, Ibrahim and Khalid El Bakraoui, had video footage of the home of a senior official at a Flanders nuclear waste facility.
The government source said: "You saw just last week in Belgium concerns that were raised around the security of civil nuclear sites and therefore, in the world in which we currently live, we think it's the right thing to do."
