Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has announced that a team of almost 30 UK Armed Forces personnel are set to travel to Kosovo to join the Nato Kosovo Force (KFOR) and support its mission to maintain safety, security and freedom in the region.
The deployment will last one year and will increase the mission’s capability following a request for more support.
The troops will carry out intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and will be based in the KFOR headquarters in Pristina.
KFOR was set up as a peacekeeping force in 1999. Troops have been contributed by around 30 countries, including Germany, Italy, Turkey, Poland and the US.
Commenting on the deployment, Fallon said: “There are significant security and stability challenges in Western Balkans.
“NATO remains a cornerstone of our defence. By continuing to defend the security of Europe, Britain’s security is strengthened at home.”
