Type 45 destroyers face refits due to engine break downs

The Royal Navy’s type 45 destroyer warships face major engine refits due to recurring reliability issues, according to a report from the BBC.

The Ministry of Defence has said that there are issues with the propulsion systems and an email seen by the BBC suggested that the entire fleet faced the common problem of ‘total electric failure’.

The six type 45 destroyers that make up the fleet are the most modern warships available to the Navy and cost a combined £1 billion.

Work to refit the ships will begin in 2019 and will likely involve added at least one new generator into the ship. The MoD has reportedly confirmed that the work will be staggered, to ensure ships are still available to send on operations, but details on cost have not yet been confirmed.

Nick Childs, of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, said: "It's an unfortunate extra cost the Royal Navy will have to swallow to sort out an unreliable propulsion system - the major weak link in an otherwise world-beating system.

"They're essentially going to have to squeeze in an extra generator to improve reliability."
